Catherine Breed completes 900-mile California coast swim
The endurance athlete finished a 111-day staged swim from the Oregon border to the California-Mexico boundary, a journey Reuters and NBC San Diego report is the first of its kind.
Breed began July 1 and reached the international maritime boundary off San Diego County on October 18. She marked the achievement with a ceremonial swim ashore at Coronado Beach on October 19.
Distance: Roughly 900 miles
Duration: 111 days
Daily average: About 10 miles in the water
A supported open-water expedition
A dinghy and a 52-foot sailboat accompanied Breed, with her crew recording coordinates so each day’s swim could resume where the previous stage ended. Reuters reported that she spent up to five hours a day swimming, usually several miles offshore, while confronting strong currents, storms and shark sightings.
Breed said the expedition was intended to draw attention to ocean conservation. The route also exposed her team to the effects of unusually strong El Niño conditions and polluted water near the southern end of the coast.
