Dana Point tags 20 Capistrano Beach homes after pounding surf
Seven homes were red-tagged and 13 were yellow-tagged after high surf further eroded the shoreline along Beach Road, according to a Monday update attributed to the City of Dana Point.
ABC7 Los Angeles reported October 12 that sidewalks were buckling and falling toward the water as swells and high tides threatened homes in the private Capistrano Bay District. The neighborhood was already recovering from damaging September surf.
Red-tagged: Seven homes
Yellow-tagged: 13 homes
Demolished: Two homes
Pending demolition: One additional home
Emergency work continues
Dana Point's official Beach Road update said emergency rock-revetment work was continuing under permits from the California Coastal Commission. The city said the shoreline is governed by several agencies and that private contractors are carrying out protective work when tides allow.
The red and yellow tags reflect building-safety restrictions, not a count of homes destroyed. The city's public page had listed seven red-tagged and 12 yellow-tagged homes as of October 8; ABC7 reported the newer 13-home yellow-tag total from a Monday morning city update.
