Glen Sprowl Jr. posthumously receives Carnegie Medal for heroism

The Stanton resident was honored for confronting the gunman during the 2023 Cook’s Corner mass shooting in Orange County.

Glen Sprowl Jr., a Stanton resident who was killed while confronting the gunman during the 2023 mass shooting at Cook’s Corner in Trabuco Canyon, has been posthumously awarded the Carnegie Medal for heroism, ABC7 Los Angeles reported September 24. Sprowl was 53.

What it means locally

The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission awards the medal to people who place themselves in grave danger while trying to save others. ABC7 reported the honor on September 24, more than three years after the August 2023 attack.

The accompanying public-domain photograph is a 1913 Library of Congress portrait of Andrew Carnegie, whose Hero Fund established the medal. It does not show Sprowl, Cook’s Corner or the 2023 shooting.
