Two killed in single-engine plane crash near Hesperia

An Aeronca Champion went down near Summit Valley Road; federal investigators are examining what caused the crash.

Two people were killed Thursday morning when a single-engine Aeronca Champion crashed near Summit Valley Road in Hesperia, the Los Angeles Times reported September 24. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said both occupants were confirmed dead when deputies arrived after the crash was reported around 9:45 a.m.

What it means locally

The Federal Aviation Administration identified the aircraft type and said two people were aboard. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating; authorities had not announced a cause or publicly identified the occupants when the report was published.

Sheriff’s officials said Summit Valley Road remained open but asked the public to stay clear of the scene during the investigation. The accompanying photograph shows a different Aeronca 7AC Champion in England in 2005 and is illustrative; it does not depict the Hesperia aircraft or crash.
