La Mesa breaks ground on 147-home transit-oriented housing project
Spring View Apartments will offer affordable homes beside the Spring Street trolley station, backed by $8.5 million from San Diego County and 40 rental-assistance vouchers.
San Diego County and local leaders broke ground September 25 on Spring View Apartments, a $106 million affordable-housing development beside the Spring Street trolley station in La Mesa. The six-story community will include 147 studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom homes for individuals, families and veterans earning 30% to 60% of the area median income.
What it means locally
The project will replace an underused section of an MTS park-and-ride lot with housing directly connected to transit. San Diego County is contributing $8.5 million and 40 project-based rental-assistance vouchers, including four Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing vouchers and 36 Section 8 vouchers. Plans include gathering and play areas, a community room, computer rooms, solar power and high-efficiency building systems. MTS says the station parking lot will remain closed during roughly two years of construction, with limited ADA spaces available and alternate parking at nearby stations.
