LA River path targets 2031 as advocates push for Olympic acceleration

The planned eight-mile link would create a continuous 32-mile corridor, but Metro says the project remains in planning with its initial phase expected in 2031.

Bicycle advocates are urging Los Angeles officials to accelerate the LA River Path project before the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, CBS Los Angeles reported September 25. The proposed project would close an eight-mile gap between Elysian Valley and Vernon, creating a continuous 32-mile walking and bicycling route from the San Fernando Valley to Long Beach.

Metro’s official project page lists the work in the planning phase and estimates initial completion in 2031. Metro has said approximately $433 million is available for construction, while alternatives that close the full gap were estimated at roughly $1 billion to $1.2 billion. Peter Abraham of PeopleForBikes told CBS Los Angeles that completing the link sooner could give Olympic visitors an alternative to driving, but Mayor Karen Bass said the project likely will not be ready before the 2028 Games.
