Long Beach keeps waterfront evacuations after waves damage homes
Broader coastal advisories were lifted Sunday evening, but evacuation orders and warnings remained for several Peninsula blocks after destructive surf damaged residences and the shoreline barrier.
Long Beach officials said eight buildings covering 13 residences were red-tagged as unsafe to enter after waves overtopped the Peninsula bulkhead and pushed water into homes and streets. A ninth building was yellow-tagged, restricting occupancy until inspectors determine it is structurally safe.
Red-tagged: Eight buildings covering 13 residences
Yellow-tagged: One additional building
Orders remaining: Waterfront homes in the 6400 and 6500 blocks of Seaside Walk
Broader advisories: Lifted at 6:15 p.m. Sunday
Crews reinforce damaged shoreline
City crews continued pumping water and repairing a damaged section of the bulkhead between 64th and 66th places. Thirty heavy-duty sandbags weighing about 3,000 pounds each were positioned at 64th Place, and the city planned to add tens of thousands of cubic yards of sand along the Peninsula.
Warnings remained for several nearby blocks, while the Peninsula stayed closed to nonresidents. Officials urged people to avoid damaged coastal infrastructure and follow emergency personnel as high surf and coastal flooding hazards continued.
