Long Beach’s $65 million Studebaker project anchors bikeway expansion
The five-mile corridor is the city’s largest bike-infrastructure project so far, advancing a 300-mile network plan while construction and traffic changes draw debate.
Long Beach is building its largest bike-infrastructure project to date along more than five miles of Studebaker Road, the Los Angeles Times reported September 25. The $65 million project runs from Second Street to Carson Street and includes bike lanes, greenways, landscaping and underground fiber-optic cable.
What it means locally
The Studebaker work is scheduled to finish in 2027 and forms part of a city goal to build 300 miles of bikeways by 2040. Clark Avenue construction is also underway, with Pacific and Orange avenue projects planned next. Supporters say the network can make streets safer and give residents more transportation choices, while some Studebaker-area residents and drivers have raised concerns about construction impacts and changes to traffic flow. The Times reported 53 traffic deaths in Long Beach in 2025 and 36 through mid-September 2026.
