Los Angeles approves Sixth Street Bridge maintenance fund
The dedicated fund can accept private donations for trash removal, bulky-item pickup, graffiti abatement and other upkeep at the landmark bridge.
The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously to establish a maintenance fund for the Sixth Street Bridge, LAist reported October 8.
Council file: 22-0708-S3
District: Council District 14
Purpose: Receive and spend private gifts, contributions and donations on bridge maintenance
Fund targets recurring cleanup needs
Money placed in the fund may be used for trash and bulky-item pickup, graffiti abatement and other beautification work. The official motion says private entities had expressed interest in helping pay for ongoing maintenance, creating a need for a formal way to accept those contributions.
The council file identifies Councilmember Ysabel Jurado as the motion’s author. It describes vandalism and bulky-item disposal as persistent challenges since the replacement bridge opened in 2022.
Bridge connects downtown and the Eastside
The Sixth Street Bridge spans the Los Angeles River between downtown Los Angeles and Eastside communities. LAist reported that the new fund comes as the city separately works to restore bridge lighting damaged by copper-wire theft.
