Metrolink advances draft plan for major service cuts

A proposed $420 million budget would eliminate 29% of weekday trains and 40% of weekend trains across Southern California, with changes potentially starting next month.

Metrolink’s Board of Directors voted Friday to move a draft budget forward for review by the county transportation agencies that fund the regional commuter-rail system, LAist reported. The plan is not final: member agencies must consider it before a final Metrolink board vote scheduled for October 23.

Systemwide proposal: 29% fewer weekday trains

Weekend proposal: 40% fewer trains

Draft budget: $420 million

Orange County and other lines face deep reductions

Under the draft schedule, Orange County weekend service would be cut in half and weekday trains would fall by nearly 40%, including reductions to weekday service reaching Oceanside. The San Bernardino and Antelope Valley lines would also lose significant weekday and weekend service, while Ventura County weekday trains would be reduced by 36%.

Metrolink officials cited rising operating costs, low ridership and an expected 18% drop in ticket revenue. The proposed reductions follow fare increases that took effect this week and proposed subsidy cuts from the Orange County Transportation Authority and L.A. Metro.

The agency lists an October 23 public hearing at 10 a.m. in the Metro Board Room at One Gateway Plaza in Los Angeles, with online participation also available. The budget and service changes remain proposals until the required approvals are completed.
