The San Diego Padres beat the Chicago Cubs 8–0 at Petco Park on September 29 to take Game 1 of their best-of-three National League Wild Card Series, MLB.com reported. Starter Michael King allowed one hit over seven scoreless innings after carrying a no-hit bid into the seventh.

What it means locally

Fernando Tatis Jr. opened the Padres’ first inning with a home run, and Manny Machado followed with another homer two batters later. Machado added an RBI double, Xander Bogaerts homered and Jackson Merrill delivered a two-run single as San Diego built an 8–0 lead. Joe Musgrove, activated earlier Tuesday after missing two regular seasons during his recovery from elbow surgery, pitched the ninth to finish the shutout. The Padres can advance to the Division Series with a Game 2 win Wednesday night.
