PCH reduced to one lane near Laguna Beach after bluff crack
Caltrans says southbound Highway 1 is limited to one lane between Irvine Cove and Reef Point while emergency work continues.
A large crack in the coastal bluff beside Pacific Coast Highway near Crystal Cove prompted Caltrans to close the southbound No. 2 lane as crews investigate erosion and the stability of the slope.
Caltrans’ highway-conditions service confirmed at 8:21 p.m. Tuesday that southbound State Route 1 was reduced to one lane from Irvine Cove to Reef Point Drive in Orange County because of emergency work. The agency said the lane will remain closed until repairs are complete.
Road: Southbound Pacific Coast Highway / State Route 1
Closure: Right lane between Irvine Cove and Reef Point Drive
Duration: Until repairs are complete
Crews assess the bluff
Recent rough surf and high tides have eroded the shoreline around Crystal Cove. ABC7 and FOX 11 reported that Caltrans is coordinating with California State Parks and the California Coastal Commission while officials review surveys and drone footage and consider repair options. The beach below the affected bluff is also closed.
Laguna Beach officials advised drivers to allow extra time and prepare for the restriction to last beyond the next several days. Caltrans urged motorists to follow posted detours and reduced speed limits.
The new highway restriction follows earlier Crystal Cove closures and cottage evacuations caused by coastal erosion, but adds a separate impact to PCH traffic.
