Mudslide closes mountain roads near Yucaipa after thunderstorms

Authorities closed three mountain-road locations Thursday evening; the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said homes were not threatened.

A mudslide closed Valley of the Falls Drive at Momyer Creek Trail, Oak Glen Road and Potato Canyon Road on Thursday evening, the Los Angeles Times reported September 24. Yucaipa police announced the closures around 6 p.m. and told residents to avoid the area while crews dealt with an unknown closure duration. The National Weather Service had warned of flash flooding as thunderstorms brought heavy rain to parts of San Bernardino and Riverside counties.

A San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson said there was no threat to homes or residents. Officials had not confirmed whether flash flooding caused the slide when the report was published, and drivers were advised not to enter flooded roads.
