San Diego County approves real-time e-bike injury warning system
The regional project will combine hospital, EMS and law-enforcement data so officials can spot crash locations and injury patterns sooner.
The San Diego County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved plans Tuesday for a regional e-bike injury warning system, the County Communications Office reported October 7.
Data sources: Hospitals, trauma centers, emergency departments, EMS providers and law-enforcement agencies
Details tracked: Rider age, time and location, helmet use, device type, injury severity and patient outcome
Budget: Existing staff and resources; no added General Fund cost
Faster local information
County officials said statewide injury data can take up to 14 months to reach the region. The new system is intended to aggregate and publicly report local trends on an ongoing basis, helping agencies identify high-risk locations and factors earlier.
The County cited a rise in pediatric trauma cases reported by Rady Children’s Hospital, from three in 2021 to 262 in 2025. Those figures provide context for the Board’s action; the newly approved warning system is a data-sharing and reporting project, not a new riding restriction.
Next step
The official announcement did not give a public launch date. It said the County will work with regional partners to collect current injury information and use it to guide faster safety responses.
