San Diego hands-only CPR campaign surpasses 1 million trainees
The County–UC San Diego initiative says 1,011,034 people have learned the lifesaving technique through more than 25,000 free training events.
San Diego County and UC San Diego announced September 28 that the Revive & Survive San Diego campaign has surpassed its goal of training one million people in hands-only CPR. The initiative, launched in early 2024, has trained 1,011,034 people through a regional network of schools, first responders, health centers and businesses.
What it means locally
The coalition includes 49 partners that collectively held 25,138 free training events. County officials said nearly half of the people who experienced an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in San Diego County last year received CPR from a bystander before emergency responders arrived. Hands-only CPR uses chest compressions without mouth-to-mouth breathing; the program teaches participants to call 911 and perform compressions at 100 to 120 beats per minute. UC San Diego modeling estimates that five years of training could lead to more than 1,600 additional bystanders performing CPR and roughly 400 additional lives saved.
