San Diego County warns against raw-milk cheeses linked to E. coli outbreak
Two local children are among 13 cases in a multistate outbreak tied to recalled Sierra Nevada Graziers cheeses, county health officials said.
San Diego County Public Health officials urged consumers on September 25 not to eat Sierra Nevada Graziers grass-fed raw-milk cheeses after the products were linked to a multistate Shiga toxin-producing E. coli outbreak. Two of California’s three identified patients are San Diego County children younger than 5, and the average age among the 13 reported cases is 5, according to the county.

The company initiated a recall September 24 covering Graziers medium cheddar, sharp cheddar, jalapeño jack and Monterey jack sold in 8-ounce and 16-ounce retail packages and 5-pound food-service loaves. County officials advised consumers to discard the cheese, wash surfaces and utensils that touched it, and seek prompt medical care for symptoms such as bloody diarrhea, severe abdominal cramps or dehydration. Severe infections can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome and kidney failure.
