San Diego Unified prepares schools for El Niño, adds science week
The district is reducing flood risks on campuses while adding classroom lessons about the weather pattern and family preparedness.
San Diego Unified says maintenance crews are clearing roof drains and storm lines, removing debris around drainage channels, inspecting slopes and trees, and staging sandbags, pumps and other flood-control equipment ahead of potentially severe El Niño weather.
Student lessons: El Niño Explorer Week, November 2–6
Campus work: Drain clearing, site inspections and flood-protection supplies
Family alerts: The district is asking families to update school contacts and sign up for regional emergency notifications
Schools and students prepare together
The district’s science team will lead a week of lessons on El Niño’s causes, regional effects and safety steps. KPBS reports that officials identified 10 campuses in flood-prone areas and said school police are developing site-specific plans for severe weather.
San Diego Unified also says some facilities could serve as temporary evacuation sites or shelters if local emergency agencies activate them. The district cautions that families should rely on official announcements before going to a school during an emergency.
