County schedules free TB testing after Southwest High exposure
San Diego County health officials are notifying students and staff after identifying a potential tuberculosis exposure at Southwest High School.
The County’s Tuberculosis Control Program and the Sweetwater Union High School District said the potential exposure period ran from June 23, 2025, through March 6, 2026. People considered at highest risk have been contacted directly.
Current students and staff: Free blood testing is planned at the school during the first week of November
Former students: Free testing is scheduled December 4 from 1:30 to 6 p.m. in the school’s South Lot
County information line: 619-692-8621
Investigation continues
The County said this is the fourth active TB case associated with the school in two years. Earlier samples that were genetically sequenced were different strains, and testing of the newest case was still pending, so officials had not established a link among the cases.
TB can spread through the air during prolonged indoor contact with someone who has active disease. A person with latent TB has no symptoms and cannot spread it, but treatment can prevent the infection from becoming active.
