SR-55 traffic shift begins final major construction phase in Orange County
Drivers on northbound State Route 55 between I-405 and I-5 are set to begin using new outside lanes October 26, allowing crews to rebuild the center median and finish new carpool lanes, according to OCTA.
The shift marks the final major construction phase of the $506 million SR-55 Improvement Project through Irvine, Santa Ana and Tustin. The project is expected to be completed in late spring 2027.
Where: SR-55 between I-405 and I-5
What changes: Northbound traffic shifts to outside lanes; median reconstruction follows
Ramp change: McFadden Avenue’s northbound on-ramp will permanently connect only to northbound I-5 after restriping
Night work and ramp access changes
OCTA said crews expect intermittent nighttime lane and ramp closures, generally from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., for about two weeks while they restripe lanes and install barriers. Similar work is planned later in the southbound direction.
Once the McFadden Avenue ramp is restriped, drivers will no longer be able to use it to reach northbound SR-55 or southbound I-5. OCTA advises drivers to watch for changing traffic patterns and use alternate routes where needed.
