The San Diego County Sheriff's Office reported the total after hosting the event at its Vista station with the county District Attorney's Office, Oceanside Police Department and the city of Vista. Participants could surrender unwanted firearms without an appointment.

Collected: 119 firearms

Assault rifles: 15

Gift cards: $100 for handguns, rifles and shotguns; $200 for assault weapons

Checks come before destruction

Authorities will process the firearms to determine whether any were reported stolen or connected to crimes. Crime-linked weapons will be sent to the appropriate agency, owners of stolen firearms will be contacted, and the remaining weapons will be destroyed under state law.

The event also distributed free firearm lock boxes and cable locks. The Sheriff's Office says residents may surrender unwanted firearms at sheriff's stations and other law-enforcement agencies year-round.
