California launches new statewide water planning effort

The 2028 Water Plan will examine long-term supply gaps and climate extremes.

The state set a supply target of 9 million acre-feet by 2040 and began a multi-year process to update water planning. The work considers how drought and intense storms affect reliability.

What it means locally

A planning target does not by itself create new water supply. Agencies and communities will shape the details through the plan process.
